Augmented novelty. Even the dusty traditional world of book publishing can’t resist the lure of augmented reality. Penguin is claiming that it’s the first US publisher to employ AR, and that in a campaign that certainly has bite.
The book in question is Vampire Academy Signature Edition, a hardback edition on the Razorbill imprint of the first volume of the teen hit Vampire Academy, written by Richelle Mead. Readers who head to the dedicated microsite and flash the book at their webcams can bring the cover to life and hear a message from the author.
VA fans can also post a picture of themselves to the site, see it transferred to the book cover, and then send it to their friends via Facebook.
As always with AR, there’s one of those how-it-works clips. This one features a young Academista putting the tech through its paces. Scary stuff indeed.
Also on the microsite is an online quiz Is Your School A Vampire Academy? Plus a handful of VA widgets and wallpapers.
